Kindertransport Poem
A Doll And A Suitcase
A beast is loose
Upon the Earth.
A goose-stepping monster
Devouring
Our children,
Our people,
The World.
There is nowhere
To go.
The world has shut its doors
And locked them.
We are standing on a ledge,
Teetering,
And we must fall-
And yet,
Hope.
England,
England of kings and empire
Offers
To take our children,
Only ten thousand,
Just the children-
How can we not?
It is life!
Wide eyed
With tears,
Our dear ones ask;
Mama,
Papa,
How can I leave you?
You must.
You must!
What will you do?
We will be fine.
But in truth,
We know the monster
Is ravenous.
Each with a suitcase
And perhaps a doll,
The children are gone,
And safe.
We have stayed,
And we will die
For you see,
The doors are shut
And locked.
